I've played with all the characters and as far as they are concerned in battle...

Jude - GOTTA GO FAST!
Milla - Magic Knight with pretty attacks. Spirits OP when you finally get them back
Alvin - DEMON FANG DEMON FANG FIERCE DEMON FANG! But seriously his charge skill is awesome and wrecks everything
Rowen - Arte tuning is cool. By the end of the game he will be able to cast spells almost instantly.
Leia - ... I didnt really care for her that much. Good aerial combos I guess.
Elise - Didnt use her that much either. needs more research

There is a white hat you can get in Xillia 2 (If it is in Xillia 1 I havent found it yet) that goes amazingly well with Rowen's butler outfit.

I really think the Xillia cast should get a sort of public award for somehow working so good with costumes.

Also just noticed that in Nia Khera when you run around as Milla the NPCs bow down when you approach them.

Seriously I forgot how great Alvin was at the start of the game.

I know Xillia has the lame mechanic where bosses can break out of stunlock whenever they want but is it that much worse than wailing on the HP sponge in Vesperia for 8 minutes?

That's incredibly dependent. It can be both a good thing and a bad thing for Vesperia.

Sometimes you feel like stringing together stylish looking combos, overlimit helps that. Other times you really feel like you need overlimit, and since it doesn't last particularly long, it's kind of like what you feel is a necessary crutch.

Then you have cases of being overleveled and similar situations, so it really goes both ways.
