I'm still honestly shocked you'd recommend Kaiji after how you talked about it.
Of course it's not going to change my opinion it's a great anime but still.

Except TTGL borders on good and bland.

It had a lot of great points but it fell flat in a lot of areas too.

Certainly not in Yokos chest.

BUT, it made me get attached to kamina in about 4 hours.
I don't get attached to real people that fast.
Not to mention the couple hours of HEART WRENCHING DESPAIR the ending caused me.
The characters were likable, the plot made about as much sense as anything else they did.
I really wish that the bit with Boota near the end would have been explored further.
Attenborough needs more screentime.

TL;DR: The important part is I had fun watching it.

I actually wouldn't go as far as to say Kamina was mediocre. In fact I really liked him.

People do have a tendency to overrate him yes, but what I mainly like about him is that he's a really big change of pace when it came to characters at the time I was watching TTGL myself. He catches your attention on the get go with all the focus that's put on him and with it he uses his screentime to (in his own dumb way) try to inspire others to be adventurous and unafraid.

Was he smart? No. But

and that's also why I found he managed to bring some interesting chemistry, and had a good amount of overbearing weaknesses which were balanced out by others (which confuses me when people say he's a mary sue when he's... obviously not.)

He played it to us straight and it was fun to watch something stupid succeed for as long as he did. He's not a deep character, he's definitely not a great character, but I don't think I could call him mediocre.

Anyway this anime is quite okay. The protagonist is refreshing in a since that he's a total Gary Stu, so if you're ever tired of seeing pansy-ass protagonists there's that. It's also about ten episodes long, so it isn't a giant waste of time. I think they've taken a lot of liberties from the light novel though; I heard the protagonist is seemingly more of an asshole than is depicted in the anime.
