Round 31: Batmafia

The Batcave

“Robin?” Batman called as he walked through the underground base beneath Wayne Manor. The Boy Wonder had split up with Batman as they had pursued the dangerous serial killer Zsasz. Batman had turned over Zsasz to GCPD, and sent Robin a message via the Bat-Phone to meet him at the Batcave. Robin had replied that he was already more than halfway there. That had been only 15 minutes ago, Wayne thought. What trouble could he have gotten into in that time?

He entered the secret code for the grandfather clock entrance to the manor. Luckily for him, Alfred happened to be polishing the coffee table in the living room containing the clock. “Welcome home, Master Bruce.”

“Thanks, Alfred. Where's Tim?”

“Master Tim has not returned yet, sir. Were you expecting him?”

Bruce looked troubled. “I get the feeling he might be in trouble.”

“Watch out, Master Bruce, or Mr. Parker might accuse you of infringement.”

Wayne smiled as he pulled back on the cowl, and began down the stairs. “Ah, Master Bruce?”

“Yeah, Alfred?”

“I also can't find Ace anywhere. He usually comes when I whistle for him.”

“I'll keep an eye out for him.”

As Batman walked back into the Batcave, he noticed that the Batcomputer was raised and on. “That's funny... I don't remember turning it on...” He stepped in front of it, and his heart sank like a rock. Every screen was a solid, pale green, except for the black question marks rotating in the centers. “Nigma.”

The main screen flickered to show a familiar face, seated in a chair. He wore a green business suit, with a red shirt and white tie, the latter of which held his pale green symbol. He also wore a bowler hat matching the suit and a burglar's mask, and his hands rested on his trademark cane. “Ah, there you are, Batman! I was thinking your Batmobile had broken down.”

“Where's Robin?”

“You get straight to the point, as always,” he chuckled. “I thought I might do the same this time. I've got a series of riddles all planned out, but... I'm willing to hand myself over if you think you can solve a little game. I could call it a riddle, but it's more in the nature of luck than skill.”

“What are you talking about?”

“Simple.” The Riddler rapped his cane on the floor. A large screen lit up behind the Riddler. A large panel showed several familiar faces... Robin, Commissioner Gordon, Lucius Fox, his faithful dog Ace... many of his friends were there. Then, he saw the bottom. Several of the villains that he thought were locked up tight in Arkham were there, as well. “I've trapped all these people in pods hidden around Gotham. Before you get any ideas, they're completely foolproof. The Joker designed them, and he knows every piece of equipment you have... I've even seen the scars you've given him. Each night, these people are going to choose one of the other pods that they suspect. At that point, you can either go with their majority vote... or you can choose not to disable any of the pods.”

“If it's their decision, why should I be the one to disable the pod?” Batman asked, though he knew the answer already.

“Letting you disable them lets you have the wonderful experience of guilt, if you lose the game.”

“Nigma, please... Why would I disable them, when I can invent something to open them?”

A chilling smile played across the puzzlemaster's face. “Because the villains you see on the screen can disable one pod of their choice each night. That's why. Once all the villains have been disabled, I'll turn myself over along with the keys to the pods, which are kept under maximum security like the pods themselves. However, if the evil outnumber the innocent... you have to take the long way around, and the villains are released into the city.”

“Alright, Riddler. I'll play your game.”

“I'm so glad. I couldn't access anything but your desktop, due to your security programs, so you'll find the program there. Let's get started!”

Batman hesitated, then clicked on a large lever on his screen and dragged it down.

"Freeze." Batman sighed. "Thank god."

"Yes, but don't count on being so lucky next time. Incidentally, the villains have disabled pod Stalin." A picture of a random citizen formed next to Mr. Freeze. Batman thought he recognized the woman, but he'd known so many it was hard to be sure.

The Riddler rapped his cane on the floor impatiently. "Let's get on with it then. Your choices, people."
