Introduction Topic for the new guys
DA EDIT!
The main post is here. This thing is odd when merging threads. Merges them by DATE.
https://halolzmafia.iftopic.com/t48p60-introduction-topic-for-the-new-guys#5538
What's up everyone?
I'm HATER, alias Yhgj7, a friend of Foxeh/Stalin's. I come from the old forums of The Nethernet, a now-extinct place where Stalin and others played Mafia and Werewolf.
A bit about me:
- I've played and hosted WW/Mafia for about 4 years now. Loved every second of it.
- I have an extremely aggressive play style and am prone to systematically interrogating players, posting walls of text, and generally flying into a mini-raegmode when faced with perceived incompetence (I'm only fair-minded before and after games ;) ). So basically an ordinary WW player. :P
-I enjoy playing WW and mafia, playing tf2, rct, counterstrike, and the occasional round of LoL.
- I like mlp (though I am not a brony-- I prefer the term 'casual viewer')
-Favorite pony: lightning dust (or post-rainbow factory rainbow dash)
----
Anywho, Shadi and I come from a different community somewhat similar to yours. I'm not going to post a link or refer to it by name here because I don't want to advertise or anything because that sort of thing gets annoying really fast. Stalin has the link to our forums and I'll leave it to his discretion whether to share it.
Anyways, Shadi and I are two out of the three main leaders of our community (the third mod, Rainboy, is tending to things back on the home front).
Our community is also centered around mafia, although we divide it into two distinct categories:
Mafia: Open roleset, simpler games
Werewolf: Closed roleset, much more complicated
There's also Assassins and Witch Hunt but those are much rarer variations. I might explain later if someone reminds me.
So if you hear me talk about Werewolf, just remember that WW is just complicated mafia.
-----
So why are we here?
Well, first priority is always having fun! So we're going to chillax with you guys for a little, see how your community works and play in a couple games.
Also, Stalin mentioned he wanted to introduce you guys to the crazy innovative TNN style of Werewolf. Well, look no further. I've hosted several of the most twisted games around in my community. Games with items? Check. Games with roles that have never before been dreamed of? Check. Bastard qq games? Hell yeah!
Anyways, I'm sure I can hammer out a good roleset that will blow peoples' minds.
And last but not least, it seeks both of our communities could benefit from a few more players. From what I've seen, your average amount of players in a game ranges from about 12-16. Our community isn't much larger, with the average game size being about 16-20 players.
It's my opinion that if we were able to pool our playerbase a little, we'd be able to host larger games and add variety to both of our communities.
(and before you ask, yes, the majority of our players are decent people, even if some seem a little inexperienced)
But first things first. I've talked with Stalin and the general conclusion is to take everything slowly. Hence, before we consider anything of that sort, Shadi and I want to get to know all of you guys, play a few games, maybe host one or two, to test the waters, so to speak.
From what I've gathered, you all seem like decent people, a good all-around community of mafia players (to be completely honest, I've become accustomed to the way WW/mafia players talk/think/reason/act and I've cone to disdain communities that don't have some sort of mafia element. On the whole, I've found WW/mafia players to be much more logical and generally more level-headed than your standard breed of online forum patrons.) Looking forward to playing with y'all.
Seeya in game!

So I see! I've been watching your round with rapt attention. We've never had a *true* mlp game where I come from since only about 20-30% of the community has tried/likes mlp. The closest we got was the last game I hosted in which everyone got a "program name" that had to do with ponies (e.g. pinkamenadianepie.exe).Zyquux wrote:HATER wrote:- I like mlp (though I am not a brony-- I prefer the term 'casual viewer')

(We're making progress on shadi - I've made him promise to let me teamviewer him watching episode 1 tonight).
I'm sorry I wasn't able to join your game when it started but my account took a bit to get activated. >.>
Also, I lol'd at your avatar when I first saw it... xD

This actually brings up the possibility of an Introductions Thread for new people, like back on the old forums.
Maybe this could become that? I dunno.

Re: Introduction Topic for the new guys
Welcome. Just a head's up, most players we have vote randomly, without thinking, or simply force ties. If incompetence really gets you mad, I'd advise you to join games only when you are very calm.
I don't really agree that people with interest in mafia are more level-headed or logical, but our community has always been pretty mature where it matters. Other than that, just keep in mind that we abuse of irony and that what seems to be insults are usually just people playing around. Also, we constantly abuse of references for no good reason (mostly from vidya and anime), and I remember at least two instances where someone new not getting them caused actual problems, if something seems to make no sense or looks offensive, think twice.
We also have a host queue thread if you decide to play a few games and ever feel like hosting.

First off: You're correct. Since your game is the next one in the queue, chances are I'll probably have the pleasure of playing in it.Hunter Axel wrote:Sup dude? Second: Hey, no worries! In my experience, most so-called "hostfail" is noticed only by the host and maybe one or two players, and even then it usually isn't a big deal (although the host often thinks it is and therefore beats himself up about it far more than is necessary).
I'm sure you'll do great. I'm looking forward to playing in your game.
----
Mentle, since you posted rather more in-depth, I'm just gonna dissect it here:
Yeah, Zyquux mentioned the part about forcing ties to me earlier on steam. In my community, we sometimes use a tiebreaking rule called "Incentive". Basically if there is a tie at the end of a round, the person who caused the tie is lynched instead. It's used in about 30% or so of our games and is my personal favorite method of tiebreaking.Mentle wrote:Welcome. Just a head's up, most players we have vote randomly, without thinking, or simply force ties.
As for voting randomly, we have quite a few players that do that (hell, I've been known to vote for really shit reasons R1), so I'm used to dealing with that sort of thing.
If incompetence really gets you mad, I'd advise you to join games only when you are very calm.
Heh. I don't get /that/ mad in reality, I mainly just flare up for a few minutes, long enough to write something resembling a scathing rebuttal. And I mainly just get mad when people are doing obviously stupid things when anyone with a half a brain can see that it won't end well (which happens fairly often with certain players in my community).
I don't really agree that people with interest in mafia are more level-headed or logical, but our community has always been pretty mature where it matters.
^That's mainly what I'm looking for. I for one love getting crazy and heated in a WW game, but once the game's done and over, I harbor no hard feelings or anything (unless the other person did something like break the rules or something truly egregious like that).
Other than that, just keep in mind that we abuse of irony and that what seems to be insults are usually just people playing around.
Good to know. I can take my share of insults as well, and sometimes during a particularly heated argument in WW there will be a thick flurry of light insults against the other person's intelligence/logics/reasoning skills/bad looks/overall homosexuality, but again it's all in fun.
Hey, I'm cool with references and inside jokes unless they actually interfere with me being able to play or understand what's going on in the game. Also, we constantly abuse of references for no good reason (mostly from vidya and anime), and I remember at least two instances where someone new not getting them caused actual problems, if something seems to make no sense or looks offensive, think twice.
Obviously if someone is voting me and citing a reference I don't know as his/her reason, I'm gonna ask for an explanation so I can defend myself :P .
As for stuff that looks offensive, heh, I'm cool with offensive stuff as long as it's not NSFW images/gorepics since I use a university computer 50% of the time.
We also have a host queue thread if you decide to play a few games and ever feel like hosting.
Great! I think I'll sign up to cohost a game with Shadi after I've played a couple of games and gotten to know you guys.

I tend to be very calm and friendly but change tone in these games to prove a point or to be as inconsistent as possible so I think that'd fit perfectly fine here.

Re: Introduction Topic for the new guys
Now that the game's over, I can post this.
I know, right? It's a fantastic idea to inhibit a particular vote. Like what just happened in MLPmafia, I voted for Yoshi because I investigated spp the night prior and found he was "Not Guilty," so I voted for Yoshi creating a tie. Setting aside being mafia-killed as it does not factor into this scenario, I would have lived. But with that rule in place, I would have died. I'm against the no-tie rule.Zink120 wrote:Welcome, welcome. It's really not needed. We tend to kill people who force ties anyway.

Maybe as a passive ability, like, "While X is alive", or "When there are more than X number of people".

Oh, I wasn't implying that you all needed to use it in your games. Just something I thought I'd mention; thought you guys might find it interesting.
While we're on the subject of tie-breakers however, I'll mention that our most common tiebreaker is LHLV (Longest Held Last Vote), which means that whoever had the most votes first is lynched (for example, if player A has 3 votes on him and player B has 2 votes, and someone else votes for player B, tying the lynch at three votes apiece, then at the end of the day player A is still lynched because he had 3 votes first).
Just another interesting tidbit.
