Re: Anime and Manga Thread
So I watched that fourth episode of Space Dandy just now
I couldn't control my laughter, this show is pure gold so far. Judging from the preview for the next episode, things are about to get even better.
Although I question what sort of continuity this show is going off with. I hope they answer without something too stupid.

So I watched the first episode of Welcome to the NHK just now, looks incredibly promising so far even if the pacing is average at this point.
And now for The Hero Yoshihiko, this is relevant to anime because it's rich man's Senyuu.
9/10, the comedy is top notch. If you haven't given it a watch, definitely do so now. It's a parody of every ancient evil awakens jrpg ever.

I will seriously never get over how fucking dumb things just got. And I'm done with it.

Re: Anime and Manga Thread
Well, I finished NHK.
I promised myself a few days ago I'd only watch an episode or two a day but I sure as hell broke that promise. I don't know about anyone else but I personally thought that show was really really easy to sit through.
On some side notes, I was expecting a masterpiece. And... well, I didn't get one, but regardless it had a batch of strong points. But I won't sing praises as to what form they come in, those will spell themselves out.
It definitely got a little too weird at some points for my liking but they weren't ever totally unjustified. Although if anything, I think these already-good ideas with already-good executions could have done better if the line of events were presented somewhat less awkwardly. The pacing itself aside from that is fine though.
And before I forget, I will warn you now, the animation can come off as painfully QUALITY every now and then. I'm going to assume this was due to budget or staff lacking since normally, characters didn't have to go through any intense motions, yet that didn't help solve it completely.
The main character is kind of a dick who rarely shows any strong points but the show really would not be the same otherwise, as stupid as that sounds.
To anyone who's interested, definitely give it a shot. It's 24 episodes.
EDIT: Oh hey and on a semi-relevant note, that marks my 181st completed anime on MAL
In other news, The Hero Yoshihiko is totally anime
you should all watch that if I haven't said so already. In relevance to whatever else I'm watching right now, Space Dandy is looking pretty good so far, imo.
EDIT 2: Quickly just checked out the manga for NHK. Hoooooooly hell the manga seems radically different in so many ways from the anime.

Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day
In terms of feels, this show is more powerful than Clannad and Clannad After Story. And it accomplishes this in only 11 episodes.
"Five childhood friends grow apart after the death of Meiko Honma, close playmate of them all. Jinta Yadomi, leader of the group when they were kids, neglects high school and lives as a shut-in when he unexpectedly starts seeing the ghost of Meiko, who can only interact with him and no one else. She has returned to ask Jinta to fulfill the forgotten wish she made as a kid."
Its rare for me to love every single minute of an anime series. Not even Gurren Lagann does that. ... I don't think any show has done that. OVAs and movies don't count. I think its safe to say that Anohana might very well be my most favorite show. Seriously, I highly recommend this show, and in fact its a show that you shouldn't skip over. In fact I might even go as far as buying the blu ray for this. Oh yeah not only was it really good, the art, sound and voice acting were high quality.
The show was animated by A-1 Pictures (Oreimo S2, Fairy Tail, Utapri, IDOLM@STER, SAO, etc.).
But yeah, go watch this.

- Episode 7 especially because:
-He entered a race against the most handsome, talented ship driver in the known universe
-BY THE WAY YOU KNOW THAT MAN IS A THREAT BECAUSE HE SPARKLES.
-LIKE A JOJO
-Dandy raced so hard he cut a planet in half with NOTHING BUT PURE SPEED
-The timing to bird flipping was so out of nowhere it worked amazingly
-LAST RESORT
-LAST RESORT
-LAST RESORT
-Blew himself up at least a trillion times AND SURVIVED
-THAT ALSO HELPED HIM ACTUALLY GO FASTER
-plowed a guy in his buttocks using his spaceship which caused the man to be gay, so hard that he vaporized himself out of current existence and became SPACE BUDDHA

Re: Anime and Manga Thread
Well on that note, I finally managed to get around to finishing Giant Robo, all seven episodes of the OVA.
The entirety of it all was pretty great, but there were some obvious flaws I need to point out, spoiler heavy by the way.
Despite all my complaining though, more than anything, they stem from lots of more minor-feeling problems that I'll try and shrug off/forget the next day, rather than big problems that crush any buildup the plot tries to have. There are certainly many more strong points with Giant Robo, which would also be super spoilers, so I won't say anything.
It's a unique OVA series and should definitely be given a chance if you have time. It's seven episodes, but each can range from about 35 minutes to an hour, so give it what'cha got when you have time.
The entirety of it all was pretty great, but there were some obvious flaws I need to point out, spoiler heavy by the way.
- Spoiler:
- For instance, they tended to introduce a few things here and there rather split second and not expand upon them too much, Alberto and Taisou's apparent rivalry ever since their younger days, and both of the characters were really fun to watch. An expanded understanding of their relationship would have been beneficial but unfortunately that wasn't the case. Same with Taisou's apparent marriage to Youshi.
It's also never particularly explained how Ginrei and her brother got their teleportation powers. I'd like to imagine the incident with the first three Shizuma Drive samples could have been the cause for that, but apparently not. They could easily have incorporated that into the story.
Speaking of her brother, Big Fire could easily have been a much better organization if they didn't make Big Fire their leader, and Genya instead. The dynamic of Big Fire would change, sure, but it could still very much have worked. He was a pretty wonderfully written villain with a tragic life and motivation, easily overshadowed all the other completely forgettable guys from the Magnificent Ten, and in fact the only member that ever really caused anything to happen.
I'm also surprised they didn't bother to explain Murasame's immortality, or precisely what happened to him at that last episode. To be frank his immortality gig really wasn't needed, and they could have easily substituted whatever good that brought about.
Episode 6 was pretty messy for that reason actually, they introduced a lot of fairly minor plot points that feel pretty last minute with no good foreshadowing and didn't really serve to do much. Like the introduction of Alberto's daughter, the "introduction" of Big Fire himself, and the royal guard robots who didn't do much. Overall, time was pretty wasted with the insight to Big Fire's more internal works. In fact if they were going to do that at all, they should have spent that time expanding on Ko-Enshaku, who was pretty much just the silent guardian type. The potential he had on its own was already more interesting than the non-specific Magnificent Ten members, which kind of makes it feel more downer. Other than complaints about Big Fire, we know there was a good reason why Ginrei was being "sealed" away but Giant Robo's lockdown was short lived and in fact, pretty much went as if they never mentioned it in the first place.
Speaking of Big Fire members, I also have to wonder exactly what Daisaku's dad was doing working for them in the first place. He didn't exactly seem hell bent on taking over the world like the rest of them did, but I guess the reason why was because of a change of heart while developing Giant Robo? Or perhaps something related to the nuclear energy? Either way, episode 6 was just wasted potential cause of that, and it left me feeling sour. A lot of those decisions for that episode's events were pretty lackluster, as was the pacing. They don't ever really touch on the fact Giant Robo is nuclear much either, which could have served for some more unique events/side issues aside from being invulnerable to Shizuma Drive shutdowns.
I also think I would have preferred Tetsugyu stayed dead. He was one of those characters that started as total pricks, and came to be unpredictably lovable by the end of it. His comeback didn't manage to serve any real purpose other than a save from that one mook which also wasn't too necessary. His death was manly and honorable, it's not really to my liking they kind of discard it for minor things like that.
On a much more minor detail, I know it's not really a normal impairment, but I thought having Ginrei just act weaker as a result of using her powers instead of having herself literally disappear would have felt less awkward.
Speaking of minor details, I was actually laughing when I noticed an animation error. After the episode where Robo loses his arm, when Daisaku calls him, they animate him in shots where you can very clearly see that he has both arms, but in the next shots where you see him from another angle, they remembered to animate him with a missing arm again.
